Use of PEG Linkers to Study Cell Death

University of Ottawa recently studied Parkinson’s disease and neuronal cell death using a PEG linker. PD is known as the second most common neurodegenerative disorder related to age. It is unknown what exactly is the cause of the disease, but it is known that neuronal cell death can be caused by the abnormal deposits from the intracellular accumulation of protein. The group synthesized 6-OHDA-PEG3-yne using Broadpharm’s Propargyl-PEG3-acid and they have concluded that protein modification using dopamine quinones can weaken proteome function, which leads to dopaminergic cell death. Future work would be needed to test if the long or short PEG-linkers would be able to prevent specific neuronal cell deaths.
